Men's Basketball Suffers Double-Overtime Defeat to Grand View

Marshall, Mo. (Jan. 10, 2026)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's basketball teams welcomed Grand View (Iowa) into the Burns Athletic Complex for a Saturday afternoon Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader.  The women's team used a record-setting performance to earn a 66-42 win.  The men's team went into double-overtime, but fell by a 97-92 score.

The men's game opened with a 7-0 run for Missouri Valley, as Freshman Damario Moss (Lexington, Mo.) sank a three-pointer and Senior Antwon Ferrell (Newman, Ga.) added four points.  The two teams traded points over the next stretch, which included a jumper from Junior Kamari Slaughter (Gary, Ind.) and a three-point basket by Ferrell to keep the team in front, 12-6, with four minutes off the clock.  Missouri Valley went nearly three minutes without a basket until a Slaughter field goal made it 14-8.  Slaughter then came up with a steal and a fast-break layup to put the lead at 16-8 near the 12-minute mark.  The first basket of the game for Junior Devin Davenport (Milwaukee, Wisc.) followed, and a jumper by Freshman Shalva Meunargia (Tbilisi, Georgia) put the MVC advantage at double-digits, 20-10, just past the midway point of the half.  Grand View responded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to move in front, 21-20.  The deficit for Missouri Valley was brief, as Moss ended the team's drought with a field goal to put the team ahead, 22-21, with just over five minutes remaining in the half.  After a pair of GVU free throws, Ferrell responded with a three-pointer, and Davenport added another three-point shot to put MVC in front, 28-23, near the two-minute mark.  Slaughter added four made free throws late in the half, Junior Anthony Leath (Westmoreland, Tenn.) sank a three-point shot and Junior Cael Sampson (Gold Coast, Australia) added one free throw to close scoring for Missouri Valley in the half, and send the team into the break with a 36-29 lead.

Play in the second half resumed with Grand View going on a 18-2 run through nearly six minutes of play to take a 47-38 advantage.  Slaughter ended the MVC drought with a layup, but GVU held a 49-40 lead at the 14-minute mark.  Missouri Valley cut down its deficit over the next three minutes, helped by a Slaughter offensive rebound and tip-in, Moss three-point play and Junior Keanu Patrick (Biloxi, Miss.) layup which cut the gap to 49-47.  The two teams traded points over the next several minutes, until a Davenport three-pointer tied the contest at 57-57 with just over seven minutes to play in regulation.  Davenport then put MVC in front with a pair of free throws, followed by two made free throws from Ferrell to make it a 61-58 advantage near the six-minute mark.  The two teams stayed close through the final stretch of the half.  Grand View eventually held a 69-66 advantage with one minute remaining in the half.  Ferrell made two free throws to cut the deficit, but GVU added two free throws to put the score at 71-68.  Davenport came through with a late three-point to tie the contest, then Grand View turned the ball over with two-seconds on the clock.  Davenport put up a half-court shot that hit off the rim, and the teams went into overtime, tied at 71-71.

Points were traded throughout much of the first overtime period.  Moss briefly put MVC in front, 76-75, midway through the period.  After a Ferrell jumper tied the teams late, Slaughter came up with a steal and fast-break layup to send Missouri Valley on top, 81-79, with 30-seconds to play.  Grand View came back to tie things up on a pair of free throws in the final seconds, and then missed a three-pointer as time expired to move the game into a second overtime, tied at 81-81.  Both Davenport and Ferrell made early baskets in the second overtime period, but GVU went on an 8-2 run over a nearly three-minute stretch.  Ferrell made a three-pointer to close the gap down to 93-90 in the final seconds, but Grand View made four late free throws to close out the game, and hand Missouri Valley a 97-92 defeat.

Ferrell scored a season-high 25 points and added his fourth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds to go with six assists.  Davenport had 24 points and seven rebounds, while Slaughter added 20 points and seven rebounds.  Moss scored 11 points.  Missouri Valley held a 47-45 advantage in rebounds and forced Grand View into 14 turnovers.
