Women's Volleyball Drops Home Contest to Grand View
Marshall, Mo., (Sept. 13, 2025)- The Missouri Valley College women's volleyball team hosted Grand View (Iowa) in a Heart of America Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon inside the Burns Athletic Complex. Missouri Valley fell by scores of 19-25, 12-25, 25-27.
The first game opened with back-to-back kills from Senior Middle Hitter Kinga Romanowicz (Krepiec, Poland) and Senior Outside Hitter Juliana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to put Missouri Valley in front early, 2-0. Grand View came back to win five of the next six points to claim a 5-3 lead. The two teams traded points over the next stretch, as Junior Right Side Alana Burton (Ogden, Iowa) and Junior Outside Hitter Laura Tavares (Merida, Venezuela) each landed one kill to help keep MVC within an 8-6 score. From there, Grand View took control, winning seven-straight points, and eventually building up a 20-9 lead. Missouri Valley worked back, as three GVU errors and two Oliveira kills cut the deficit down to 20-15. Oliveira added another late kill and Senior Libero Ana Franco (Cascais, Portugal) put down two aces, but Grand View won the opening game, 25-19.
Play in the second game started with Grand View working out to a 7-3 advantage. Three-straight GVU errors to go with an Oliveira kill helped MVC work back to an 8-7 deficit. Grand View responded by taking nine of the next ten points to stretch its lead out to 17-8. Missouri Valley was unable to cut its deficit back down to single-digits late in the game, as the score ended at 25-12, with GVU taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Needing a win in the third game to extend the contest, Missouri Valley started with one Oliveira kill, followed by a block from Junior Middle Hitter Stacy Maimur (Chicago, Ill.) and a kill from Freshman Outside Hitter Rylee Adams (Odessa, Mo.) to keep the team in front, 3-1. After GVU briefly took a 4-3 lead, Missouri Valley went back on top, as Senior Right Side Maria Bertholdo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Adams landed back-to-back kills to make it a 6-4 score. The two teams traded points until an Oliveira kill made it a 9-8 MVC lead. Grand View won three-straight from there, and moved ahead, 11-9. Missouri Valley bounced back, and took five of the next six points, all on GVU errors, to claim a 14-12 lead. Then, a four-point run for MVC included one kill from Adams, who then teamed up with Burton on a block, to go with an ace from Junior Setter Clarissa Dias (Praia Grande, Brazil) to stay ahead, 18-14. Oliveira teamed up with Burton on a block, then landed a kill, and Freshman Libero Emily Elias (Fulton, Mo.) finished off an ace as Missouri Valley won four of five points late in the game to build up a 22-17 lead. Grand View came back, and eventually won six of seven points to tie the teams at 24-24. A service error from GVU gave Missouri Valley its first game-point, at 25-24. However, Grand View won the final three points played in the game to come out on top, 27-25, and sweep the match.
Oliveira led with nine kills and added eight digs. Sophomore Setter Kellen Fitzgerald (Frisco, Texas) led with eight assists and Franco had eight digs. Missouri Valley finished with six blocks and four aces as a team.
Missouri Valley drops to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the Heart. Grand View improves to 12-1 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.
