No. 23 Women's Soccer Secures Shutout Win at Grand View
Des Moines, Iowa, (Sept. 30, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's soccer teams traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, Saturday, for a Heart of America Athletic conference doubleheader against Grand View (Iowa). The No. 22 men's team opened the doubleheader with a late goal to secure a 2-1 win. The No. 23 women's team scored two goals late in the first half, and earned a 3-0 victory.
The women's game started with the teams trading possession early. The first shot on goal came at the 20-minute mark, and Sophomore Forward Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.) put her attempt past the Grand View keeper and into goal to put Missouri Valley in front, 1-0. Just over three minutes later, Sophomore Forward Judit Ferre (Barcelona, Spain) nearly added to the advantage, but her shot was saved. Sophomore Forward Viktoria Einsbor (Havdrup, Denmark) forced the GVU keeper into another save with 15 minutes to play in the half. With less than two minutes to play on the clock, Grand View committed a foul in its penalty box, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for Missouri Valley. Senior Midfielder Miluska Guevara (Panama City, Panama) put her penalty kick attempt into goal, and moved the lead to 2-0 going into halftime.
The second half started with a quick goal created by Missouri Valley. Guevara set up Einsbor with a shot that beat the Grand View keeper and made it a 3-0 score with two minutes played after the restart. Sophomore Defender Marta Carrasco Mesa (Sevilla, Spain) nearly tacked on another goal, but her shot hit off the crossbar near the 59-minute mark. Grand View created just one shot on goal the entire game, coming with less than five minutes remaining on the clock, which was saved by Freshman Goalkeeper Lola Benitez (Madrid, Spain) to secure the 3-0 victory.
Arribas scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season and third game-winning goal. Guevara now has three goals and four assists, while Einsbor added her fourth goal. Benitez made one save and earned her first shutout of the season. Missouri Valley held an 11-1 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Missouri Valley improves to 5-3-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference. Grand View drops to 2-3-3 on the season and 2-1-1 in the Heart.
Up next, the Viking soccer teams host MidAmerica Nazarene in a Heart doubleheader, Wednesday evening inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium. The Pioneers are ranked No. 6 in the men's soccer coaches' poll and No. 24 in the women's poll. Women's game starts at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
