Women's Soccer Plays No. 17 Cardinal Stritch to Draw

Fayette, Mo. (August 30, 2019)- The Missouri Valley College soccer teams played a neutral-site doubleheader in Fayette, Mo., against Nationally ranked Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) University teams. On a soggy day, the women's team earned a 1-1 tie against No. 17 Wolves, while the No. 2 Viking men's team held on to its first half lead to defeat No. 7 CSU, 1-0.

Both teams struggled to produce quality chances on goal in the first half of the women's game. The first shot came with over 17-minutes played, but the attempt from Junior Forward Paula Inclan (Madrid, Spain) went wide of goal. Cardinal Stritch followed five minutes later with its first shot, but Freshman Goalkeeper Marina Barneda Massaguer (Palamos, Spain) saved the attempt to keep the contest scoreless. Inclan added another shot with just over 10-minutes to play in the half, but her attempt again went wide. The Wolves tried to capitalize late in the half, with two chances inside the MVC box in the final moments, but Barneda Massaguer made a save, and the rebound attempt went wide. The teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.

Missouri Valley started the half with a chance on goal, but the attempt from Junior Forward Valentina Cardoso Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia) was saved with less than 30-seconds played. The two teams traded possession over the next several minutes, but the next shot didn't come until near the 70-minute mark when Senior Defender Yvette Bellman (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) had an attempt saved. The rebound off the save fell to Inclan, and she scored to put MVC in front, 1-0. The Vikings continued their pressure, and Inclan had another shot on goal saved with 72-minutes played. Seven minutes later, Barneda Massaguer saved a Cardinal Stritch shot. The Wolves continued to pressure, and eventually came through with the game-tying goal, making it a 1-1 score with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation. Both teams were unable to break the tie as the second half came to an end.

The first overtime period featured two shots from the Vikings, but neither were put on goal. The second overtime period saw a shot on goal from Junior Forward Laura Castano Cardoso (Bogota, Colombia), but her shot was saved five minutes into the period. Neither team came up with a game-winner, and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Inclan scored her first goal of the season, and the Vikings out-shot the Wolves by a 9-6 margin. Barneda Massaguer made three saves in goal.

The men's game opened with an early shot from Cardinal Stritch, but Senior Goalkeeper Andrej Vidali (Belgrade, Serbia) came up with his first save of the match. Missouri Valley worked a pair of corners just past the 10-minute mark, but could not create a shot on the opportunities. The two teams traded possession over the next few minutes, and Vidali came up with another save near the midway point of the half. The Vikings responded less than one minute later, with a shot from Senior Forward Sergio Toro Garcia (Madrid, Spain), but his attempt went wide. Junior Forward Dominic Newton (Manchester, England) followed with a shot less than one minute later, but the Wolves keeper made a save. Newton collected the rebound off the save, and put his second shot into goal, giving MVC a 1-0 lead with just over 21-minutes remaining in the half. Cardinal Stritch tried to tie the contest ten minutes later, but Vidali came up with another save. Missouri Valley could not add to its lead late in the half, and went into the break holding a 1-0 advantage.

Cardinal Stritch had an early chance to start the second half, but a shot hit off the crossbar with just over four minutes played. The Vikings were unable to build up much pressure, but Newton had a free kick opportunity, about 25-yards from goal. Newton's attempt hit off the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-0. The two teams struggled to create chances through the rest of the half. Neither team put a shot on goal through the rest of the game, and Missouri Valley earned a 1-0 victory.

Newton scored his second goal of the season, but the Vikings were out shot in the match, by an 11-8 margin. Vidali secured his second shutout, making four saves in goal. Missouri Valley held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks in the match.

The win moves Missouri Valley to 2-0 on the season, both wins coming over teams ranked in the top 11 Nationally. Cardinal Stritch falls to 1-1.

The Missouri Valley men's team will host Southwestern Christian (Okla.) University, Monday at 5 p.m. Up next for the Viking women's soccer team is a home match, Tuesday at 7 p.m., against Missouri Baptist University.
