Cross Country Opens Season at Great Rivers Open, Men's Team Places Second

Canton, Mo., (Aug. 29, 2025)- The Missouri Valley College cross country teams opened their 2025 seasons with competition at the Great Rivers Open in Canton, Mo., Friday evening.  The men's team placed second overall with two individual top 15 finishers.

 

The men's team was led by Freshman Daniel Menefee (Ellisville, Mo.0 who placed at No. 13 with a time of 16:04 in the 5k race.  Junior Daytona Blaine (Shelbina, Mo.) followed at No. 15 with a time of 16:39 and Sophomore Evans Kiptoo (Eldoret, Kenya) was No. 17 overall with a time of 16:55.  Freshman Angel Campos (Pharr, Texas) placed at No. 22 in a time of 19:50 and Freshman Bristol Sheetz (Winston, Mo.) rounded out the team scorers with a time of 19:50 to place at No. 23.  The final two runners for the team were Sophomore Montique Griffiths (May Pen, Jamaica) who placed at No. 24 in a time of 19:51 and Sophomore Amardeep Basra (Houston, Texas) at No. 26 with a time of 21:11.

 

Leading the women's team was Sophomore Faraja Nyasa (Kansas City, Mo.) who placed No. 23 overall in the 4k race, finishing in a time of 19:47.  Sophomore Brynna Wentland (Higginsville, Mo.) followed at No. 25 in the standing, coming in with a time of 20:18.

 

In the men's standings, Mount Mercy (Iowa) won the meet with a total score of 15.  Missouri Valley finished second with 59 points and Culver-Stockton (Mo.) was third with 68 points.  Topping the women's standings was Mount Mercy with 19 points.  Missouri Valley did not have enough runners to earn a team score.

 

Up next, the Viking cross country teams will compete at the Larry Young Invitational in Columbia, Mo., Sept. 12.
