No. 6 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Past Kansas Wesleyan at Home
Marshall, Mo., (March 27, 2026)- The No. 6 Missouri Valley College men's volleyball team hosted Kansas Wesleyan for a Heart of America Athletic Conference match, Friday evening inside the Burns Athletic Complex. The Vikings swept the Coyotes by scores of 25-9, 25-16, 25-11.
Game one started with Missouri Valley going in front early, using a block and a kill each from Senior Middle Blocker Pedro Berti (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Freshman Outside Hitter Bart Mulder (Hoogeveen, Netherlands), along with an ace from Freshman Outside Hitter Loan Fargier (France) to make it a 6-1 score. The Vikings gradually added to their advantage over the next stretch of play, as Junior Outside Hitter Frederico Baptista (Esmoriz, Portugal) landed two kills, Fagier had a kill and a solo block, and Junior Middle Blocker Joao Tavares (Parana, Brazil) added two kills to put the advantage at double-digits, 14-5. Missouri Valley followed with another run, taking five-straight points, which included two kills each from Berti and Fargier, and a kill from Mulder, extending their lead out to 19-6. That is as close as the Coyotes could get in the game, and a kill from Fargier, a block each from Mulder and Berti set the advantage at 23-7. Two final service errors from KWU helped Missouri Valley close out the opener, 25-9, in favor of the Vikings.
The second game started with Missouri Valley falling behind by a 7-2 score. The Vikings worked back into the game, winning seven of the next eight points, featuring a block and a kill from Freshman Setter Alberto Fontanabona (Brazil), a solo block from Berti, and two kills from Freshman Outside Hitter Timothee Carpentier (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to take the lead, 9-8. The team traded points through a 14-14 score, but MVC pulled away with another run, taking five-straight points, which included two kills and a solo block from Carpentier, and two KWU errors to stretch the lead out to 19-14. Missouri Valley continued to extend their lead through the rest of the game, and took six of the final seven points, helped by two Coyotes errors, two kills from Fontanabona, and a kill each from Carpentier and Mulder to end game two, 25-16. The Vikings held a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Going for the sweep in game three, Missouri Valley used two kills from Sophomore Outside Hitter Guilherme Lorenzini (Florianopolis, Brazil) and four KWU errors to move in front, 6-1. The Coyotes closed the gap through the next stretch of play, as they sat at a 9-5 deficit. The Vikings followed, winning the next four points, as Lorenzini added a kill and a block, along with a kill from Carpentier to hold a double-digit advantage, 13-5. The next kill for the Vikings came from Junior Middle Blocker Jaxson Gonzales (Dallas, Texas), followed by an ace from Carpentier and another kill from Lorenzini, making it a 17-7 score. Kansas Wesleyan was unable to cut into their deficit, and Missouri Valley won six-straight points, which included three KWU errors, and a kill and two aces from Lorenzini to send the team to match-point. A final block from Fontanabona ended the game at 25-11 for the Vikings sweep.
Leading the team was Carpentier with eight kills, an ace and a block. Mulder followed with seven kills, while Lorenzini had six kills, two aces and a block. Fontanabona led with 18 assists and two blocks, and Baptista added ten digs. Missouri Valley limited KWU to a -0.086 hitting percentage, with a total of nine blocks and four aces.
Missouri Valley improves to 17-4 overall and 11-4 in the conference, while Kansas Wesleyan drops to 5-14 on the season and 2-14 in the Heart.
