Bio
Originally from Sedalia, Missouri, Missouri Valley College tennis coach Caroline Matz brings a strong background in athletics and a passion for developing student-athletes both on and off the court. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Parks, Recreation, Sport and Tourism, with emphasis areas in Sport Management and Recreation Administration.
Her journey in tennis began during her sophomore year of high school and she quickly fell in love with the sport. By her senior year, she had developed into one of the top players in the state, finishing seventh in Missouri in singles. Through her experience as an athlete, tennis taught her discipline, resilience, and the value of consistent hard work.
Before focusing on tennis, Matz competed in multiple sports growing up, including baseball, softball, track, and basketball. Each sport contributed to her development, teaching lessons in teamwork, competitiveness, mental toughness, and leadership that now influence her coaching philosophy.
After her playing career, Matz continued her involvement in the sport by competing in club tennis at the University of Missouri. Her desire to coach became clear after she spent two seasons coaching at Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia. The experience confirmed her passion for working with student-athletes and making a difference in their lives. She is now in her third year of coaching and takes over the Missouri Valley College tennis program beginning with the spring competition season.
In addition to her coaching experience, Matz has worked within the athletic departments at both State Fair Community College and the University of Missouri. She has also been actively involved in growing the game at the grassroots level by running youth tennis camps and helping establish a youth tennis program in the Sedalia community.
What she enjoys most about coaching is helping athletes grow, not only in their performance but also as individuals.
“Seeing their improvement and confidence develop over time is incredibly rewarding.”
Beyond competition, Matz emphasizes values that extend far beyond tennis. Hard work and consistency are central to her program, along with competing the right way, with respect, integrity, and strong character.
“I want my athletes to understand that with the right mindset and effort, they can achieve anything they set their minds to.”
Her coaching style has evolved to become more athlete-centered. She places a strong emphasis on open communication, regularly seeking feedback from her players and valuing their perspectives to better understand their needs.
For Matz, the key to success, both individually and as a team, is consistency.
“If we consistently work hard, stay disciplined in our academics, and strive to be good teammates and good people, success will follow both on and off the court.”
Building strong relationships allows her to adapt her coaching to different personalities and learning styles. By understanding how each athlete communicates, learns, and responds to feedback, she is able to tailor her approach to help each player succeed.
At the collegiate level, she recognizes that one of the biggest challenges is recruiting student-athletes who fit the culture and standards of the program, while also balancing individual needs with the goal of maintaining a strong and unified team environment.
Through her athlete-centered philosophy and commitment to character development, Matz aims to build a program focused on growth, accountability, and success both on the court and beyond Missouri Valley College.
