Tennis Teams Compete at Conference Tournament Wednesday

St. Louis, Mo., (April 24, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's tennis teams competed in the first day of their conference tournaments, Wednesday, at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo.  The men's team was seeded No. 2, and earned a 4-0 quarterfinal win over Baker (Kan.), followed by loss to No. 3 seed Missouri Baptist in the semifinals.  The women's team was seeded No. 5 and fell in the quarter finals, 4-3, to No. 4 seeded John Brown (Ark.).

 

Men's Tennis

Quarterfinals vs. Baker (Kan.)

Doubles:

No. 1-Freshman Sergio Martinez/Senior Francesco Caratti (Novara, Italy) defeated Juan Manuel Avila/River Flaska, 6-2.

No. 2-Freshman Alvaro Ruiz/Sophomore Alecson Deschamps (Bluemenau, Brazil) defeated Fabian Martinez/Corvin Christ, 6-2.

No. 3-Freshman Thomas Desgris (Annecy, France)/Sophomore Alexis Diaz (Bordeaux, France) won by forfeit.

 

Singles:

No. 1-Marintez did not finish against Avila, 6-3, 3-2.

No. 2-Diaz did not finish against Christ, 3-6, 4-1.

No. 3-Freshman Ruslan Anurev (Novorossiysk, Russia) defeated Flaska, 6-1, 6-0.

No. 4-Caratti did not finish against Martinez, 6-1, 5-2.

No. 5-Deschamps defeated Junior Kyler Kosanke, 6-1, 6-0.

No. 6-Ruiz defeated Jack Forrest, 6-2, 6-1.

Missouri Valley defeated Baker, 4-0

 

Semifinals vs.

Doubles:

No. 1-Caratti/Martinez lost to Luca da Silva Embenriter/Dragan Omcikus, 3-6.

No. 2-Ruiz/Deschamps did not finish with Ihab Mokhles/Nicolas Sanchez, 4-4.

No. 3-Desgris/Diaz lost to Arkhip Tokmakov/Timofey Tokmakov, 2-6.

 

Singles:

No. 1-Martinez did not finish against Ebenriter, 3-6, 4-5.

No. 2-Diaz lost to Omcikus, 1-6, 2-6.

No. 3-Anurev lost to Mokhles, 4-6, 4-6.

No. 4- Caratti did not finish Arkhip Tokmakov, 6-7, 2-1.

No. 5-Deschamps lost to Timofey Tokmakov, 6-3, 7-5.

No. 6-Ruiz did not finish against Sanchez, 7-5, 1-4.

Missouri Valley lost Missouri Baptist, 0-4.

 

Women's Tennis

Quarterfinals vs. John Brown (Ark.)

Doubles:

No. 1-Sophomore Claudia Casas (Tarragona, Spain)/Sophomore Renata Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico) lost to Lin Xin Tan/Abigail Woodring, 3-6.

No. 2-Freshman Hannah Brown (Marshall, Mo.)/Freshman Laura Moreno lost to Erin Kuykendall/Ellie Swan, 4-6.

No. 3-Freshman Deborah Mhizha/Junior Milene Marciniuk (Curitiba, Brazil) defeated Carline Hillock/Kyla Isaac, 6-2.

 

Singles:

No. 1-Martinez lost to Tan, 0-6, 1-6.

No. 2-Brown defeated Woodring, 6-1, 6-3.

No. 3-Marciniuk defeated Hillock, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

No. 4-Casas lost to Kuykendall, 6-0, 6-7, 3-6.

No. 5-Junior Tristan Liebenberg (Hartbeespoort, South Africa) lost to Swan, 6-3, 4-6, 5-7.

No. 6-Moreno defeated Isaac, 6-3, 6-3.

Missouri Valley lost to John Brown, 3-4.

 

The men's team ends its season at 10-6, while the women's finishes its season with a 6-8 record.
