Rodeo Teams Compete at Tennessee-Martin
Martin, Tenn. (April 17, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College rodeo programs competed at the Tennessee-Martin rodeo in Martin, Tenn., over the weekend. The men's team finished second overall, with one event winner, and the women's team placed fourth.
The men's rodeo team took the top six spots in the bareback riding average, led by Freshman Kooper Heimburg (San Tan Valley, Ariz.) who finished with a 165 in the average to place first overall. Heimburg won the first go-round with an 84, followed by an 81 in the second go-round to place third. He collected 160 points. Second with a 163 in the average was Junior Colt Eck (Redfield, Kan.). Eck also placed second in both go-rounds with scores of 78 and 85. Eck earned 150 points. Third in the average with a 160 was Junior Ty Pope (Waverly, Kan.). Pope won the second go-round with an 86 and earned 120 points. Senior Colton Crawford (Walsh, Colo.) finished fourth in the average with a 154 and earned 70 points, Junior Grant Worthington (Helper, Kan.) was fifth in the average with a 148 to earn 45 points and Freshman Hayden Leavell (Ozark, Ark.) was sixth in the average with a 140 to earn 20 points.
In saddle bronc riding, Pope finished second in the average with a 145. He placed second in both go-rounds with scores of 72 and 73. He earned 150 points. Junior Tyler Freeman (Cadiz, Ky.) was third in the average with a 139 to earn 120 points, while Eck was fourth in the average to earn 60 points and Senior Garrett Golliher (Camdenton, Mo.) was fifth to earn 40 points. Both scored only in the first go-round with a 66 and a 62 respectively. Also, Freshman Chase Applewhite (Heber Springs, Ark.) was fifth in the steer wrestling average with a 20.6 to earn 40 points.
The women's side was led by Senior Kelci Bends (Ashland, Mont.) in breakaway roping, who finished tied for second in the average with a 6.1. She earned a 3.3 in the second go-round to finish second, and earned 95 points. Senior Taylor Mason (Marshall, Mo.) was fifth in the breakaway roping average with a 6.4, placing third in the second go-round with a 3.5. She earned 55 points. Mason also tied for third in the goat tying average, with a 13.6. She was tied for second in the first go-round with a 6.7, and fourth in the second go-round with a 6.9. She earned 105 points. Freshman Maggie Stewart (Sheridan, Ill.) also tied for third in the goat tying average with a 13.6. Stewart was fifth in the first go-round with a 6.9, and was second in the second go-round with a 6.7. She earned 95 points.
The men's rodeo team placed second in the team standings with 825 points. Tennessee-Martin took first with 960 points. The women's rodeo team was fourth overall with 200 points. Tennessee-Martin took the top spot with 460 points.
