Rodeo Teams Take First & Second at Arkansas-Monticello
Monticello, Ark. (April 10, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College rodeo programs competed at the Arkansas-Monticello rodeo over the weekend. The men's team placed first overall with two event winners, and the women's team took second with one event champion.
Missouri Valley claimed five of the top six spots in the bareback riding average. Freshman Kooper Heimburg (San Tan Valley, Ariz.) was first with a 146 in the average. He was second in the first go-round with a 76, followed by a 70 in the second go-round to finish third. He collected 145 points. Junior Ty Pope (Waverly, Kan.) was second with a 145 in the average. He won the first go-round with a 78, and followed with a 67 in the second go-round to collect 130 points. Junior Colt Eck (Redfield, Kan.) was third in the average with a 142. He was second in the second go-round with a 71 and earned 120 points. Fourth in the average Senior Nick Pelke (Mondovi, Wis.) with a 141, earning 80 points, and Freshman Hayden Leavell (Ozark, Ark.) won the second go-round with a 73, and finished sixth in the average with a 132 to earn 70 points.
In saddle bronc riding, Pope took first in the average with a 143. He won the first go-round with a 71, and tied for first in the second go-round with a 72. He earned 170 points. Junior Tyler Freeman (Cadiz, Ky.) also tied for first in the second go-round, with a 72 to earn 50 points. Eck finished third in the average, with a 63, and earned 90 points.
The women's team was led by Junior Betsy Roemer (Jonesboro, Ark.), who finished first in the goat tying average with a 13.8. She was third in the first go-round with a 7.2, and tied for first in the second go-round with a 6.6. She earned 155 points. Senior Lakin Cunningham (Lewisburg, Kan.) was second in the average with a 13.9. She tied for first in the second go-round with a 6.6 and earned 117 points. Freshman Maggie Stewart (Sherida, Ill.) was fourth in the average with a 14.9 and earned 62 points. In breakaway roping, Senior Kelci Bends (Ashland, Mont.) finished third in the average with a 5.4. She finished second in the first go-round with a 2.7, and was third in the second go-round with a 2.7. She earned 115 points. Also, Junior Sadie Biggs (Harrison, Ark.) finished second in the second go-round of barrel racing, with a 14.2. She earned 60 points.
The Viking men's rodeo team captured first overall with a total of 795 points. Tennessee-Martin was second with 770 points. West Alabama was on top of the women's standings with 405 points. Missouri Valley was second with 272 points.
Up next, the rodeo teams will compete Thursday through Saturday at the Tennessee-Martin rode in Martin, Tenn.
