Viking Men's Lacrosse Falls in MCLA Tournament

Marshall, Mo. (May 11, 2015)- The No. 3 Missouri Valley College men’s lacrosse team opened play at the MCLA Division II National Tournament Monday afternoon in Irvine, Calif. The Vikings played No. 14-seed Siena Heights (Mich.) University in the first round. Missouri Valley held a 6-2 halftime lead, but fell to the Saints in an 8-7 final score.

Missouri Valley, playing in its second-straight MCLA Division II National Tournament, opened the game with two goals early in the first quarter. Siena Heights got off a total of seven shots in the first quarter, but Freshman Goalkeeper Matt Heinzerling-Weis (Farmington, Minn.) kept the Saints off the scoreboard, as Missouri Valley held a 2-0 lead after the first quarter.

Siena Heights answered back in the second quarter, tying the score at 2-2. However, the Vikings scored four-straight goals in the final stages of the first half to hold a 6-2 lead going into the halftime break. Missouri Valley put another goal on the board in the third quarter, but Siena Heights came back to score four goals and make the score 7-6 going into the final quarter of play.

The Viking lead eventually was wiped away as Siena Heights scored two goal through the early minutes of the fourth quarter to hold its first lead of the game at 8-7. The Vikings got eight shots off in the quarter, but were unable to tie the score in the final stages of the game. Missouri Valley fell to Siena Heights by an 8-7 score.

Leading the way for Missouri Valley was Freshman Midfielder Carson Brezinksi (Edmonton, Alberta) and Senior Midfielder Doug Brown (Baltimore, Md.) who each scored two goals. Brown also added an assist to finish with three points in the game. Sophomore Attacker Colin Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ontario), Senior Midfielder Jeremy Frosch (Ocean Springs, Miss.) and Sophomore Michael Dougherty (Ellicott City, Md.) all had one goal in the game. Heinzerling-Weis finished with seven total saves.

The loss ends Missouri Valley’s season at 11-2 overall, while Siena Heights advances to the quarterfinal round with a record of 12-2.

The Vikings end a 2015 season that included a second-straight GRLC Division II championship and a second-straight appearance in the MCLA Division II National Tournament. The men’s lacrosse team also put 12 of its student-athletes on the GRLC Division II All-Conference Team.
