Golf Teams Compete at Heart Preview
Overland Park, Kan., (Oct. 22, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's golf teams competed at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Preview at the Nicklaus Golf Club at Lionsgate in Overland Park, Kan. The men's team finished third, with a pair of top five individuals, and the women's team placed seventh with one top ten golfer.
Leading the men's team were the pair of Freshman Brad Storrer (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Junior Chad Coburn (Bloemfontein, South Africa), who both finished with scores of +6 (150) in their two rounds of play, nine shots back of the leader. Coburn had one of the lowest scores of any golfer in the tournament, turning in a -1 (71) in the second round. Freshman Landin Neill (Smithville, Mo.) followed at No. 20 with a final score of +13 (157), while Junior Nelius De Jager (Upington, South Africa) came in at No. 36 with a +20 (164) to finish out the team scorers. Senior Cade Basson (George, South Africa) totaled a +21 (165) to place at No. 39. Sophomore Sebastian Liffers (Heitersheim, Germany) played as an individual, and shot a +25 (169) to finish at No. 43. Liffers finished with a +2 (74) in the second round, 21 strokes better than his first round.
As a team, the Vikings finished third in the standings, with a final score of +39 (615). No. 13 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) won the tournament with a +9 (585) and No. 19 Mount Mercy (Iowa) was second with a +36 (619). Park (Mo.) followed in fourth with a +40 (616).
The women's team was led by Junior Hanna Rieker (Munich, Germany) who placed sixth overall with a two-round score of +16 (160), nine shots behind the leader. Rieker finished with the lowest score in the second round of all golfers, turning in a +2 (74), trimming 12 shots off the first round score. Sophomore Kendra Warden (Ontario, Canada) came in at No. 17 with a +31 (175), followed by Freshman Victoria Menard Varela (Coruna, Spain) at No. 31 with a +50 (194). Freshman Sydney Righter (Camdenton, Mo.) rounded out the team scorers with a +52 (196) to place at No. 32 and Junior Madison Mills (Willard, Mo.) totaled a +53 (197) to place at No. 33.
The Vikings placed seventh as a team with a total score of +145 (721). No. 25 Park (Mo.) won the tournament with a +70 (646).
One more tournament remains for the golf teams in the fall competition season. The men's VR team will play at the Columbia (Mo.) Fall Tournament, Oct. 28-29, at the Columbia Country Club in Columbia, Mo.
