Men's Golf Produces Individual Champion, Team Runner-Up Finish at Heart Championship
Moravia, Iowa, (April 25, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College men's golf team played at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship at The Preserve on Rathbun Lake Golf Course in Moravia, Iowa. In three rounds of play, the Vikings finished one stroke back of first place, and produced the individual conference champion.
Leading the team, and capturing the program's fifth individual Heart championship was Freshman Mateo Quiroga (Canalones, Uruguay), who shot a three-round total of -15 (201) to finish nine strokes ahead of the field. Quiroga finished with a -6 (66) in the first round, a -3 (69) in the second round and a -6 (66) in the final round of play. He joins Felipe Gomez (2021), Nicolas Evangelio (2019), Jordan Dickson (2012) and Craig Gibson (2009) as individual conference champions.
Following was Freshman Dominic Hoskin (Witham, England) who finished No. 12 overall with a final score of -1 (215). Hoskin had his best score in the third round, finishing with a -4 (68) to move up eight spots in the leaderboard in the final round. Senior Andres Rueda de Leon (Tabasco, Mexico) finished at No. 16 with a score of +1 (217). He shot under-par in the second round, with a -1 (71). Freshman Nelius de Jager (Upington, South Africa) finished the team scorers with a +3 (219), which included a -5 (67) in the third round to rise 15 spots in the leaderboard. The fifth golfer was Freshman Valentin Bosdari (Mendoza, Argentina), who finished at No. 45 with a +14 (230).
As a team, the Vikings finished with a total score of -14 (850) to place one shot back of first place Park (Mo.) at -15 (849). Missouri Valley had the best round of any team at the event, shooting a -14 (275) to finish the tournament. Central Methodist followed at -7 (857) in third place.
As the individual conference champion, Quiroga earns an automatic berth into the 2023 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship to compete as a medalist. The tournament takes place at Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., May 16-19.
