Men's Basketball Suffers OT Loss to Baker

Marshall, Mo., (Jan. 25, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's basketball teams hosted Baker (Kan.) inside the Burns Athletic Complex Wednesday evening in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader. The women's team pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 73-66 victory. The men's team went to overtime, but fell by a final score of 75-71.

Missouri Valley jumped out to an early lead at the start of the women's game, as a pair of three-pointers from Freshman Raegan Brown (Mokane, Mo.) and Sophomore Giavanna Moore (Independence, Mo.) and a basket from Junior Ana Arroyo (Madrid, Spain) made it an 8-0 score with two minutes played. Baker cut its deficit in half over the next minute, but four points from Moore and another field goal from Brown kept MVC on top, 14-6, with four minutes played. The Wildcats again chipped away, and trailed, 17-13, one minute later. A three-pointer from Sophomore Marina Mellado (Valencia, Spain) and a basket from Rajone Callahan (Wichita, Kan.) stretched the advantage out to 22-14 near the one-minute mark. Baker went on a run to end the quarter, and scored six-straight points to make it a 22-20 score going into the second quarter of play.

A quick basket from Arroyo came after the restart, and Senior Irene Madrid (Barcelona, Spain) added a three-pointer to put the advantage at 27-20 with just over one minute played. The Wildcats got to within a 29-26 deficit, but Mellado followed with a pair of field goals to put the score at 33-26 near the four-minute mark. The Vikings went scoreless for a more than three minute stretch in the game, as BU eventually trailed, 33-30, with less than three minutes to play in the half. Callahan ended the drought with a basket, and Mellado sank a three-point shot to put the lead at 38-30 with two minutes left on the clock. Baker again worked its deficit down late in the quarter, scoring six-straight points to send the teams into halftime at 38-36.

The Wildcats tied the score quickly in the third quarter, then worked up the team's first lead of the contest, 44-40, with two minutes played. Missouri Valley went more than three minutes without any points, but a pair of field goals from Arroyo and Mellado tied the teams at 44-44, with more than four minutes played. Moore put MVC back on top moments later on a three-pointer, and another Arroyo basket near the four-minute mark kept the team in front, 49-46. The advantage stretched out to 51-46 on a Senior Brecon Antrillo (Lakewood, Colo.) basket less than one minute later. The final stretch of the quarter featured BU trimming its deficit down to 53-51, as the teams went into the fourth quarter of play.

The fourth quarter started with a quick run for Missouri Valley, as Arroyo scored four points, and both Antrillo and Moore added one field goal each to help the team put together an 8-0 run and hold a double-digit advantage, 61-51, with three minutes played. The lead reached 66-55 just over one minute later on a three-pointer from Moore. The two teams traded points over the next several minutes, with BU getting to within a 68-60 score near the two-minute mark. Moore and Antrillo followed with both making a pair of free throw attempts in the final minute of play to put the team back on top by double-digits, 72-60, in the final minute. Baker worked back to a 72-66 deficit, but one more free throw from Antrillo capped scoring and sealed a 73-66 victory for the Vikings.

Moore led with 23 points, followed by 12 points and seven rebounds from Arroyo. Antrillo totaled 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while Mellado came off the bench to score 12 points and grab seven rebounds. Missouri Valley forced 20 turnovers in the game and scored 24 points off those turnovers. The Vikings also held a 38-37 edge in rebounding.

Missouri Valley improves to 12-9 overall and 8-7 in the Heart. Baker drops to 9-10 on the season and 5-9 in the conference.

The two teams traded points at the start of the men's game. Sophomore Jarrius Burnett (Warrenton, Ga.) scored the first points of the game for Missouri Valley, followed by a steal from Junior Vincent Taylor (Dallas, Texas) and a fast-break basket from Sophomore J'Luan Patterson (Belleville, Ill.). A three-pointer from Sophomore Jace Lance (Marshall, Mo.) tied the teams at 7-7 with just over four minutes played. Baker followed with a 7-0 run to go on top, 14-7, just over one minute later. Junior TJ Wallace (Amory, Miss.) started a stretch for MVC with a basket, while Patterson capped a three-point play. Sophomore Logan Walker (Lebam, Wash.) added a free throw and Burnett finished an 8-0 run for the Vikings with an offensive rebound and a field goal to move the team in front for the first time, at 15-14, near the 12-minute mark. The two teams again traded points over the next minute of play, as the score sat at 18-18. Wallace broke the tie with a three-pointer, while Freshman Colin Maclin (Memphis, Tenn.) put the MVC advantage at 23-18 one a field goal just past the midway point of the half. The advantage stretched out with a basket from Burnett, followed by a steal from Sophomore Oliver Pauleon-Gerard (Covington, Ga.) and a fast-break dunk from Wallace, making it 29-20 with seven minutes remaining in the half. The advantage reached double-digits for the first time less than two minutes later, 34-23, on a shot from Walker. The Vikings increased their lead over the final stretch, as a three-pointer from Burnett put the score at 41-27, and the team went into the break on top, 41-29. Missouri Valley limited BU to only 25-percent shooting from the floor and forced seven turnovers.

The Viking advantage increased as the start of the second half, after a pair of Taylor free throws made it a 43-29 score just a little over minute after the restart. The two teams traded points over the next few minutes, and a Lance three-pointer set the advantage at 51-36 with five minutes played. Baker scored eight-straight points to trim the deficit to 51-44, with a basket from Maclin ended the run to make it a 53-49 score with just over eight minutes gone in the half. The Wildcats again put together a run, and outscored MVC by a 9-0 margin to tie the contest at 53-53 near the eight-minute mark. Lance answered with a three-pointer moments later, then sank a free throw to keep the team on top, 57-53. Baker came through with five-straight points, and went in front for the first time since the first half, at 58-57 with less than seven minutes remaining. A free throw from Taylor tied the teams, and Wallace sank a pair from the free throw line to put Missouri Valley ahead, 60-58, with more than five minutes to play. Baker built up a 64-60 lead over the next stretch, but a three-pointer from Walker and a basket from Maclin allowed MVC to hold a 65-64 advantage in the final two minutes of the half. Taylor added a late free throw, but BU tied the teams late with a pair of made free throws. Lance had a last-second three-pointer miss, and the teams went into overtime tied at 66-66.

Playing in the team's fifth home overtime game this season, Burnett opened scoring in the extra period with a three-pointer. The Wildcats scored the next four points to move in front, but a field goal from Wallace allowed MVC to hold a 71-70 advantage midway through overtime. The Vikings were kept scoreless through the rest of play. Baker added a pair of late field goals and one final free throw to close out the game, and defeat Missouri Valley, 75-71.

Wallace scored 13 points and came down with five rebounds, while Lance had 13 points and five assists. Burnett added 12 points and six rebounds. Missouri Valley forced 18 turnovers and produced 18 assists in the game.

Missouri Valley falls to 6-15 on the season and 4-11 in the conference. Baker moves to 15-5 overall and 10-4 in the Heart.
