eSports Rocket League Opens Competition
Marshall, Mo., (Oct. 5, 2021)- The Missouri Valley College eSports team opened its Rocket League competition season this week. The Rocket League team came back from an early deficit to earn a 3-2 victory in games played over a team from Marquette (Wisc.).
The Rocket League team of Freshman Grant Woltkamp (Kearney, Mo.), Freshman Kolby Smothers (Kearney, Mo.) and Freshman Kristopher Falcone (Lakeland, Fla.) opened its meeting with Marquette in the NACE StarLeague Challenger Division by dropping two of the first three games. The Vikings lost the opening game, 2-3, earned a shutout win in the second game, 5-0, but fell in the third game in overtime, 1-2.
The fourth game featured a comeback victory for the Vikings, as the team faced a deficit late in the contest, but scored with under one minute remaining to tie the game. The Vikings eventually won on a golden-goal in overtime, 4-3. The win forced a decisive fifth game, which Missouri Valley won, 3-1, to take the match-up.
Woltkamp led the team with nine goals, while Smothers added three goals, and Falcone added two goals.
The Rocket League team will compete again in the NACE StarLeague Challenger Division, Monday at 6 p.m., inside the Missouri Valley eSports Arena.
