Baseball Ends Season with a Split Against Park
Parkville, Mo., (April 29, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College baseball team finishes its 2023 season with a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader, Saturday afternoon against Park (Mo.), to finish a four-game series in Parkville, Mo. The Vikings fell in a high-scoring first game, 23-2, but won in the second game, 6-2, to split the doubleheader.
The first game featured Park scoring four runs in the first inning, then adding three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Pirates used a double to bring home two runners, to extend their lead to 9-0. Senior Rightfielder Kyle Weber (Marshall, Mo.) scored their first run for the Vikings in the top of the fifth, but Park answered back with a long rally to score six more runs. Missouri Valley used an error, a single and followed with Freshman Leftfielder Silvan Stilzebach (Moosburg, Germany) bringing home Sophomore Catcher Tatsuki Ueno (Oregon City, Ore.) with a single. The Vikings eventually fell by a final score of 23-2.
Second Baseman Luke Stoner had two hits and one RBI, while Stilzenach added one hit and one RBI. Weber and Ueno finished with one hit and one run each. The Vikings used four pitchers in the contest.
The second game started with a scoreless first inning. Park went in front early again using three errors and one hit to bring two runners home. The bottom of the third inning started with two singles for the Pirates but Senior Pitcher Logan Ellinwood (Doyline, La.) struck out a pair of batters to leave the runners stranded. Both teams were kept scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. However, Missouri Valley extended its lead with a long rally in the top of the sixth as the Vikings loaded the bases with a hit by the pitch, a single by Junior Centerfielder Ivory Daniels (Little Rock, Ark.), a walk from Sophomore Catcher Josh Turner (Pensacola, Fla.), and a single from Sophomore Third Baseman Nick Tsoulfanidis (Wentzville, Mo.) bringing home two runners. Junior Shortstop Josias Mogollon (Barquismeto, Venezuela) followed with a three-run homer to move the team ahead, 5-2. As the rally continued, Daniels was hit by the pitch and came home on a single from Senior Third Baseman Jumpei Ohashi (Asahikawa, Japan) to end the game and preserve a 6-2 victory to split the doubleheader.
Mogollon led with one hit, one run and 3 RBI's, while Tsoulfanidis added one hit, one run and two RBI's. Ivory Daniels, and Junior Rightfielder Bryce Daniels (Clarksville, Tenn.) had one hit and one run each. Ellinwood pitched a complete-game, giving up five hits, two runs, and five strikeouts.
Missouri Valley finishes its 2023 season at 15-31 on the season and 11-21 in the Heart. Park moves to 17-29 overall and 11-21 in the conference.
