Baseball Falls to Columbia on the Road

Columbia, Mo., (April 18, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College baseball traveled to Columbia, Mo., for a non-conference game against Columbia (Mo.), Tuesday evening.  The Vikings went in front early, but fell by a final score of 11-4.

The top of the first inning featured two-out production from Missouri Valley.  Sophomore Shortstop Jumpei Ohashi (Ashikawa, Japan) walked, then stole second base.  Sophomore Third Baseman Jayden Mah (Nanaimo, British Columbia) walked and Freshman Designated Hitter Luke Brooks (Hastings, Neb.) was hit to load the bases.  A passed ball allowed Ohashi to score, and MVC went in front, 1-0.  Columbia countered with two-out offense, using a Viking error and a two-run homer to move ahead, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning.  Freshman Pitcher Mason Fenwick (Mississaugua, Ontario) took down the Cougars in order in the second inning, but CC added to its lead in the third.  Two hits and a pair of walks helped create three runs and extend the team's advantage to 5-1.  Columbia added another two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to make it a 9-1 score.  Missouri Valley cut into its deficit in the seventh, as Sophomore Rightfielder Jayden Simpliciano (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Junior Centerfielder Ivory Daniels (Little Rock, Ark.) both singled.  Ohashi then cleared the bases with a three-run homer to put the deficit at 9-4.  The Cougars added another pair of runs in the seventh and eighth innings to cap scoring and defeat the Vikings 11-4.

Daniels had two hits and one run scored, while Ohashi totaled one hit, two runs and three RBI's.  Simpliciano added one hit and one run scored.  The loss went to Mason Fenwick, who pitched 2.2 innings with two hits, four earned runs and one strikeout.

Missouri Valley drops to 11-27 after the loss, and Columbia moves to 30-12.

Up next, the Viking baseball team is scheduled to host its final Heart of America Athletic Conference series of the regular season.  Missouri Valley will play a four-game series against Benedictine (Kan.) with 1 p.m., doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday at Indian Foothills Park.
