Men's Golfer Set for National Championship

Mesa, Ariz., (May 15, 2023)- A Missouri Valley College men's golfer has is set to compete at the 2023 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship at Las Sendas Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz.

Freshman Mateo Quiroga (Canelones, Uruguay) has earned an automatic individual berth into the National field after taking first place overall at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship last month.  He won the tournament at The Preserve on Lake Rathbun in Moravia, Iowa by nine strokes, with a final three-round score of -15 (201).

Quiroga became the fifth individual conference champion on program-history, joining Felipe Gomez (2021), Nicolas Evangelio (2019), Jordan Dickson (2012) and Craig Gibson (2009).  Quiroga also was named the Heart Newcomer of the Year and Heart Golfer of the Year, in addition to four weekly Men's Golfer of the Week Awards from the conference, and two weekly National awards from the NAIA. 

Round one of the National championship at Las Sendas Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz., begins Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., (PST) for Quiroga.  His second round will be Wednesday at 8:20 a.m., (PST).  A cut will be made after the second round, and only the top 40 golfers in the standings will advance to the final two rounds, Thursday and Friday.
